The first major project of EMED Mining was located on the island of Cyprus. Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa has contributed to the country's culture development into a financial and trade centre.
Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 but remains a member of the British Commonwealth. The country's culture is founded on Greek and its legal system and business life in general have developed along the British model. Prior to becoming a member of the European Union in May 2004, Cyprus amended its tax legislation and now offers a very favourable taxation environment and an extensive network of double taxation treaties.
The Cypriot per capita income is one of the highest in Southern Europe with the services sector becoming an increasingly important part of the economy. One third of the island has been occupied by Turkey since 1974 but most recent initiatives strive for reunification.
Cyprus is approximately 9,250 square kilometres in area and the island's terrain is comprised of a central plain flanked by mountainous regions to both the north and south. The climate is temperate with hot, dry summers and cool winters.
Mining Laws in Cyprus Cyprus has a modern and robust mining law that provides security of tenure and right of access to private land for exploration purposes. There is a strong tradition and culture of mining in Cyprus, and mining has been an important contributor to national wealth until recently.
Access and Infrastructure in Cyprus Cyprus has well developed infrastructure to support exploration and mining operations. Exploration access to field areas is assisted by a well developed road system and sparse vegetation cover. Outcrop is therefore very good and ground surveys are able to be conducted efficiently and effectively.
